The Fox Sisters

        In a small town in Rochester, Pennysylvania in 1848, Kate and Margaret
        heard a strange rapping noise in their bedroom. Their parents found the
        girls sitting in their bed conversing with invisible agencies responsible
        for the rapping. Their parents hastily devised a code with which
        the spirits could answer questions. The event became front page news.

        Kate and Margaret were demonstrating their skills to packed audiences.
        The Vatican condemned it as,  "Scharlatan Devil worship."
        The sisters astonished their believers when they confessed that it was
        a hoax. The rapping noise had been made by dislocating their toe joints.
        Despite this revelation their fame continued to grow .
        Audiences came to witness the the Fox sisters click their toes on command.
       

        A confession followed a series of other revelations that the sisters were
        in communication with the spirit world.
        It became impossible for anyone to tell where the truth lay. ..
        In the meantime rival spiritualist had begun producing more spectacular
        phenomena and the Fox popularity faded.
        They died it was said in obscurity and drink.


      However, the Fox sisters are still regarded as one the founders of the
      spiritualist movement in 1848. Most spiritualist today have forgotten them.
      There are quite a few Popes the Vatican would prefer to forget.+
