What if jail had a Battle Royale? originally an entry for The Daily Slice
I stared at the floor of my cell. The old intercom system let out a high pitched whine, and the Wardens voice echoed through the cell block.

"Ezekiel Gedden."
I heard a few laughs in the distance. Poor bastard. He was the first to be chosen for the hell that was Jalympics

When I was a kid, I laughed at the word. But as I aged, I began to understand what it meant. When the jails started to fill to quickly, the government thought of a way to get rid of a few, and convince people to try harder not to go to prison. Each month, five inmates were selected for the Jalabyrinth. They were thrown into a maze, with no lights, and the last one standing wins. The inmates are supposed to have killed each other, but each winner has said the same thing- there is something else in that maze with them.

"Xavier Jones."

I laughed to myself. I'm dead meat, I thought. My name hadn't been called, but it would be. The drawing is supposed to be random, but I was the ideal nominee. I had pissed off the government. I was convicted of murder, but I was innocent. The senator of Maine killed a man, and threw the blame on me. I wasn't able to hire a lawyer, and the one they gave me couldn't put together a decent testimony. I was found guilty in less then 20 minutes. People saw through this, and it wasn't long befoe several petitions were made, demanding I be let go. The government allowed it, but they kept me in jail. I would be released tomorrow.
The day after the Jalympics.

"Johnathon Moyer."

"Alexander Harris" The entire jail went silent. The most brutal murderers name had been called. He had won the game twice already. This months game was going to be fun.

As I waited for the last name to be called, the crackle and pop of the intercom was maddening.

"Micheal Cooke." I cursed. I knew my name would be called. I knew it.

Guards came to fetch me from my cell. They dragged me to the entrance of the maze, 5 flights of stairs, each leading to a different place in the maze. Except for Alexander, each of us looked at each other, knowing we would die, just wondering who would go first. The guards pushed us up the stairs. and shoved us into the maze.

The place was pitch back. I felt around, and found a wall. I kept my hand on it and began to walk. Five minutes in, just as my vision was beginning to adapt, a bright flash of light blinded me. I blinked, and the maze was dark again. I couldn't see a thing. There were no advantages in the Jalabyrinth, sight included.

I walked more, and a few minutes later, I heard someone. Someone was mumbling to themselves. I think it was Johnathon. I pressed myself against the wall, hoping he wouldn't find me. He walked past, oblivious that a potential killer and victim was so close. I walked away from him. The game wouldn't turn me into a monster.

Not even a minute later, I heard Johnathon scream. The alarm that signified that someone had died sounded, and another flash of light blinded me. In the half of second of life, I saw a hole in the middle of the hall. I didn't see what was at the bottom of it, but I knew it wasn't pretty. I walked as close to the wall as I could. I heard heavy footsteps behind me. Even Alexander, the burly man that he is, couldn't make those steps. I walked faster, and the footsteps quickened as well. I began to run, forgetting the possible traps, the other inmates, my only focus was getting away from the thing behind me. I ran, ignoring the alarm signifying another death. I ran and tripped on a wire. As I fell forward and face planted on the concrete floor, the footsteps became louder, closer. I rolled onto my back, and looked in direction of the thing. I strained to see it through the darkness. I saw the outline of a mans body. I tried to see the head, and the flash of light almost blinded me. AS I blinked away the pain of the flash, I saw the things head. It looked like a demonic bulls head was sewed onto the body of a barbarian. As the thing loomed over me, I heard its raspy breathing. It sounded like it was in pain. I saw the outline of its foot rise above my head, and I shut my eyes as I waited it to crash down onto me.

It didnt come. Instead, I heard the thing scream. I opened my eyes, and I heard the thing fall backwards. I heard a second set of foots steps, lighter then the monsters, but still heavy. Alexander. I saw his shadow pass me and stand over the thing. He had found a broken plank, and he was using it like a spear. I wrenched it out of the creature. I stood up.

"Thank you." I panted. Alexander turned to me. He remained silent, and raised the spear. My eyes widened as he shoved it into my stomach. I gasped, and he twisted the plank, destroying my internal organs. As I began to cough up blood, he yanked the spear out of me. I fell to the ground, and I heard the alarm start to go off.
