word count 292 Mom stands in her living room. She had not seen her brother George in years. Neither of them were able to travel. Though they lived a mere 25 miles from each other, visiting was nearly impossible. She was excited. He was coming to see her. A couple years prior George was diagnosed with cancer, and he was fighting the battle with every breath that he gave. He was alone in life with only the love of his three grand sons. His had been married twice, and both wives died of cancer. He only had two children. One died four years before from a heart attack at 36 years old. The only immediate family that was left was a daughter that was addicted to both drugs and drama. No one was sure why George chose continue to live. The phone rings. Mom answers. “Jewell, I will be there when I get another ride. My grandson's car has blown a motor.” Two hours later, there was George standing by their brother Roy's truck. He was too weak to walk up the three steps into the tailor. Mom holds on to the rail so that she can meet her brother. She was weak from her age, illnesses, and excitement of seeing her brother. After a hug, George tells Mom a special message. “Sis, I have missed you.” “I missed you, too.” Mom said fighting back the tears. “You look good.” George laughs. “Don't be lying.” “I have come to tell you that I don't have long. I wont be around in a month. I wanted you to know that I love you.” That was two weeks ago. Now George is on his dying bed, and Mom awaits another call. |
