Note: The prompt for this poem was to write a poem from the point of view of a Biblical villain. I picked Herod. As far as I know the form has no name.
To be king is quite divine,
Lovely women, Lots of wine.
Even ruling is not tough,
Rome does the unpleasant stuff,
While I am blessed.
‘Twas on my blessed birthday
That your dancing made me say,
“What a fair and lovely face,
In the entire Jewish race,
She is blessed.”
The I swore the promise whole,
“From the bottom of my soul,
By Jehovah, as I live,
Anything you ask, I’ll give!”
For we are blessed.
I did not think that unwise,
As I looked into your eyes.
I knew you would never dare
To request something unfair.
You are blessed.
I’m shocked by what you want now,
And I cannot break my vow.
So because of what you said.
Poor John’s paying with his head.
Is he blessed?
