Bonus: Antoinette’s Profile

She had her mind set on being a Math teacher at a Catholic school, to honor the nuns that helped her discover her love of Mathematics. She worked hard, took an extra Math class each year at school. This all changed one July day in 1980 when she met a boy with dark skin and darker brown eyes than hers.

He used a lame line on her – “Are you going to stand there and look beautiful, or are you going to serve the ball?” She was too shocked by it to think straight. Antoinette thought it was funny and a compliment, but it did somewhat embarrass her. When she looked at him, saw that he blushed she decided that he was someone she needed to know better.

His name was Micah, but she later learned everyone in his family called him Chance. She loved the story behind it and tried to get him to write about it. As the two went along with their special relationship – together on every holiday and vacation – Antoinette began to rethink her decision to become a teacher. She listened to him on the phone talk about a part-time job he had at the bank where his father worked: Chance would help the computer programmers. She loved what he told her he would do and thought it was something she wanted to do. Fortunately, for her, the college she applied to had a new Computer Science degree. She would transfer into it after the first semester.

Prom night, something she looked forward to for years, arrived. It was as wonderful as she had hoped and dreamed. He said he loved her, making Antoinette cry, because she had long ago felt the same, wanted to say the words to him, but wasn’t sure he felt the same.
Antoinette told Chance that she would assist him over the summer, to search for a painting he knew that existed, one that was important to their future together.
