The Train

I never knew what Hank Sr. meant
When he sang about the lonesome sound
Of the midnight train whining low
I do now when I heard it tonight

Only a man who's lost his love
Would know what he sings about
How the sound of a train in the night
Could bring a lonely tear to your eye

I wonder what it was like long ago
To ride the rails from place to place
Trying to leave your pain behind
Only to find it again when you got there

How many men are there like me
Who walk the streets in the night
Reminded by things they see and hear
Of a woman's eyes and her smile

I stopped and listened to that sound
I closed my eyes and thought of you
The sound drifted away into the night
Like the dreams I had for me and you
