Wrote it for my daughter. It still haunts me today. Always will. Sept. 29,2009
The Steps

There's a little girl on the steps
Her bags are packed and she's waiting
For someone one she wants to forgive
For someone she hopes will come
Someone she hopes will finally be her father

The cars go by and they don't slow down
They go by never knowing she's there
As they pass they take away a little bit of hope
And leave behind a little more pain
Till there's nothing left but tears and the truth

There's a man in a car far away
Angry that he had to change his plans
Angry that he couldn't be strong enough
Angry that he couldn't be man enough
To say turn around we're going to get her

There's a man alone tonight
Trying to make amends
Trying to forgive himself
And live with the shame of knowing that
There's a little girl on the steps
