A poem about a mystery of a wandering girl... What will happen in the end? |
From my destination, I must have turned wrong way, but no one I could have asked, had passed throughout the day. I could have turned around before, but now I'd gone too far, and then with all the gloomy sights, I wouldn't dare have left my car. And so I just kept going, down a long and black drive, left to right and all around, nothing looked alive. Out of the dark and dim sky, fell the uneven drops of rain, and through the deep gray fog, nature looked too plain. Everywhere near the road, I could see nothing in my sights, because through all the shadows, I could only see through my lights. On the road were bumps and holes, but no lines could I see, nor any signs of life or help, I was getting scared as I could be. With no phone service and all alone, I had plenty of gas to spare, but having driven as far as I did, this frightening place just wasn't fair. Then suddenly in front of me, was standing there a girl, and running off the road to miss, my mind went in a whirl. Once my car had stopped, and I jumped and ran for her, 'what was she doing out here,' was all I could concur. I knew she was alright, still standing there the same, but having almost hit her, I called myself a shame. As I stood there looking at her, she had on a nice blue dress, but covered in dirt and wet from rain, she looked like quite a mess. Making sure she was alright, I offered her a ride, she hid her face and nodded, keeping her arms by her side. In my car I asked her, if she knew which way, only forward did she point, having nothing else to say. So onward I drove, with her head always down, hopefully she told the truth, and we were close to a town. I wanted to know where she came from, because she had to live somewhere, and how far had she gone, before I had found her there. But I knew she hadn't talked, since I'd taken her with me, and so I kept my questions silent, nosy I did not want to be. Then I saw the rain had stopped, and the fog was fading fast, and when I heard my phone beep, I knew I could call someone at last. Right then I did pull over, and told her I was making a call, but then when I looked for her, she wasn't there at all. Out of my seat I flew, looking everywhere with fear, how could she have gotten out, without a sound to hear. Then to the side of the road, another car I could see, there it was alone, smashed into a tree. And frantically I ran, calling the police on my way, until I reached the horrible sight, where a young girl lay. There on the ground she was, the same one from before, with the blue dress that was dirty and wet, and how I wasn't sure. This girl I saw now was dead, and it was impossible to explain, but this girl had ridden with me, to me this was plain. In the distance I could hear, the sirens coming fast, and then from right behind me I heard, a 'thank you' as the wind blew past. Quickly I turned and there she was, standing with a smile for me, and then she disappeared in a light, because I had set her free. |
