The origins of St. Nicholas Day 9, Christmas in July
The Christmas Spirit

Bespectacled, bewhiskered too,
a jolly laugh of “ho-ho-ho”
is more than just a fairy tale
about a man who lives in snow.

Born Nicholas, this young Greek boy
lost both parents as a child.
He used his fortune to comfort
the poor and needy who’re reviled.

In time the story spread and changed
as facts morphed into myths of old.
The truth, however, still remains
in the spirit of the story told.

A time for sharing what we have:
a smile, a coin, perhaps a meal.
It’s not in what we share as much
as that we share and what we feel.

So tell your children St. Nick’s tale
and help them understand his place
in spreading joy and happiness;
a spirit we should all embrace.
