Not According to Plan

Another person someone knew
One more friend of a friend.
"I'll never see him again." I believed
This first meet was the end.

My girlfriends felt differently.
I didn't know the man
I then saw hit on both of them.
Matchmaking soon began.

We both visited their home
Ate popcorn, drank iced tea.
In their third-floor apartment
We four would play Monopoly.

My boyfriend thought it harmless.
Too self-centered to surmise
That I could care for someone else,
Until I broke it off with him. Surprise!

My mother became angry
I'd ditched a certain thing.
She calmed down shortly
Then he bought me the ring.

It wasn't for a wedding
But that lovely Emerald said
That he desired only me
That went straight to my head.

My snarky sister remarked
At a dinner with family
That I needed no birthday gift.
I smiled."That's fine with me."

He proposed a few months later
I joyfully said "yes!"
No future filled with spinsterhood
Engaged to him, I felt blessed.

My brother acted pleased for me
But then asked, "Who'll look after Mum?"
It's a good thing he was sitting down
Or he'd have been flat on his bum.

I've many stories like this from

I'd grown,and did what I wanted
