A homecoming poem. (Form: Couplets)
More than a Soldier

A silver flash against a cloud,
the sound of jets that seem so loud,
an answer to the words we pray:
Daddy’s coming home today!

I watch the news on the T.V.
The scenes they show, they’re so scary,
I sometimes have bad dreams at night.
I wish we didn’t have to fight.

No longer will I have to worry.
He’s coming home. Mom says, “Hurry,
it’s time to go. He’ll be here soon.
His plane should land just before noon.”

We gather at the Air Force base.
I scan the crowds; I see his face.
He waves and smiles, his eyes have tears
that seem to wash away my fears.

I listen to the speech they give
about protecting how we live
by fighting in a far off land
but I won’t let go of his hand.

I hope someday there will be peace
but until then, I won’t release
this strong hand that now comforts me -
this soldier that I call “daddy.”
