Hello Everyone! We are hope that you are having a good summer. Angel and I love summer. We decided to do a Victorian Times Newsletter. I would love to have lived back then. Angel and I would like to tell you about these times. Here are a few things that I goggled and this won't be a long newsletter. We are just giving essential facts. So, sit back and enjoy. We will take you there.

The Victorian Era of history and that of the British Empire was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from June 1837 until her death on January 1901. Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act of 1832.

The fields of social history and literature refer to the Victorian Era as Victorianism when talking about the attitudes and culture of the last two thirds of this century. This also focuses on Victorian morality which refers to morals, language and behavior. The Victorian Era followed the Edwardian Era.

Culturally, there was a transition away from the rationalism of the Georgian Period and toward romanticism and mysticism with regard in religion, social values and art. The era was a long period of peace known as Pax Britannica but was disrupted by the Crimean War in 1854. The end of the period saw the Boer War.

Prime ministers Disraeli and Tory served the Queen faithfully. The population of England and Wales rose from 13.9 million to 32.5 million during Queen Victoria's reign. Ireland's population decreased from 8.2 million to 4,5 million. It would be safe that some people moved to other countries. Gothic Revival architecture became quite popular. Photography emerged. Queen Victoria was the first to be photographed.

During the early part of the era, the House Of Commons was headed by two parties. The Whigs and the Tories. The Whigs became the Liberals, the Tories became the Conservatives. These parties were led by prominent statesmen The unsolved problems relating to Irish Home Rule played a great part in politics in the later Victorian era. Southern Ireland achieved independence in 1922.

The Industrial Revolution was introduced. Industrialization bought with it a middle class whose increase had quite an effect on the social strata herself. Life styles, values and morality had an effect as well. Residential space was increased in the city. The essential , unknowablility of each individual and society's collaboration in the maintenance of a fascade behind which lurked inmunerable mysteries were the themes which preoccupied many mid-century novelists.

The novel was important in the Victorian Era. Charles Dickens, {A Christmas Carol} The Bronte Sisters and George Elliot were great authors of this time. I love Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and Charlotte's "Jane Eyre." "Wuthering Heights" is considered Romanticism.

Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas evolved. The husband and wife team Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning were famous for their love poems to each other. This era also bought us Alfred Tennyson.

This is all we have about Victorian Times. We hope you have enjoyed this newsletter. Angel and I will be doing a Halloween Newsletter and a Christmas Newsletter. You can always e-mail us with suggestions or articles. See you at Halloween.
