An ambulance is dispatched to the sight of an accident

NINE ONE ONE

It was another slow day at police headquarters for Agnes, as most Sundays almost always were in this small town of three hundred people. So when her phone suddenly rang to life shortly after noon, she was abruptly startled from her reverie.

“Nine one one,” she said, “how can I help you?”

“Ma’am? This is an emergency! We need some help, and fast!” came the reply.

“What happened and where are you?” asked Agnes.

“Somebody just fell down here at the Town Square, and he’s terribly hurt.”

“OK, sir. We’ll have some people there as soon as possible,” Agnes reassured the caller. She immediately dispatched an ambulance to the scene of the accident, whispering a silent prayer.

Sam and his partner Fred were the only emergency medical technicians the town had to offer, and they quickly got in their ambulance and hurried to the Town Square. Upon arriving, they witnessed a large group of men and horses gathered around the center.

It was a strange sight, but they didn’t have time to think about it.

After grabbing the gurney and their medical kits from the back of the vehicle, they slowly began pushing their way through the mass of equestrian onlookers. When they finally came to the scene of the accident, the two medics saw a terrible sight.

“My God,” Fred said, trying to hold back his lunch. “What happened here?”

“He was just sitting up there,” one of the men said, pointing to a fifteen foot high wall. “I guess he slipped off.”

After a moment the man continued.

“We tried to save him. We really did, but there was nothing we could do. Because in the end, all the King’s horses and all the King’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”
