tribute to our Vets free verse
Marshall Road

It set there at the bottom of a hill.
The green made it's white paint stand out and the grey roof brought memories back.
The days we played in the attic
While mom was fixing an apple pie.
Remember coming down the stairs like cattle. Just to get a taste with cold milk.

As we drove to dad's house, my heart began to quicken.
This day would be different than all the rest as we turned off the highway heading down Marshall Road.

We could see dad tending to moms roses.
He had built her such a lovely flower place.
Bricks to keep it formed just right and an angel to bless it every night.
I saw dad look up as we drove near he had a strange look on his face this time.
A fancy car was part of our convoy.
Slowly he came toward us with a smile that was only his.
We stepped out of our cars and the strange man out of his.

The man was dressed in a dark blue suit with a flag on the lapel.
I told dad, “This is Jeremy Mercer a businessman.”
Jeremy reached out his hand to shake my dad's hand.
In his hand was a blue velvet box and gave it to dad
Jeremy told dad, “His father didn't come back from Nam.”
So he went back to Nam to see where his father lost his life
He found something that belonged to my dad being sold by a street vender.

“Mr. Josh Marshall it is my great honor to meet you and shake your hand. Thank you Mr. Marshall for serving your country.
I hope this gift brings some closure to you, as shaking your hand has brought peace to me.”

My dad opened the box and there it was; his dog tags.
He went over to the flower garden and set down.
He spoke to his beloved Molly as he always did.
Then a rainbow appeared out of nowhere shining on Dad and his tags and Molly's Angel.
