About an experiment gone wrong and the scientist who discovers the impossible. |
Angel Fall Even when I was little I knew that I truly wanted to be scientist, which for a young child is an eccentric aspiration for the future when my fellow peers are wishing to become presidents, princess’s, and other normal young kid ambitions. Growing up in my hometown, Chandler, Arizona was like growing up in a forsaken small town filled with the most pretentious girls and the most condescending boys. Being a person with a bounteous brain capacity exceeding a simple senseless dodo bird, I was targeted by these ferocious creatures that flocked together into the ladies bathroom applying vibrant colors to their faces in hope of attracting a mate, the ultimate football star; the quarterback. These young females thought of me as creepy and gross only because I had a fancy for experimenting with foreign chemicals which is the reason I got into a whole mess of human genetic mutation. When entering the science field I knew I wanted to study the many chemicals that exist in other parts of the world, those that are not recognized in the world of the “safe” liquids that is the United States of America. I fell into a crowd that travelled the world, going in and out of lab facilities filled to the brim with chemicals that could morph the genetic DNA to impossible things. Of course those acids were monitored with security, always on watch by heavily armed guards for the protection of the people. Thanks to my high level of security clearance I was unfortunately lucky to interact with these substances up close and personal. Inside one of these military laboratories, my best scientist companion as well as my best friend, Dahlia Richard and I hovered over the glass beaker that began to sizzle quietly revealing its magical properties. Dahlia and I knew that the process that we were observing now was a complete mystery to the rest of the world. Once we were finished with our scientific inspection of the liquids we packed up our supplies and started to pack up the substances in their appropriate containers. As Dahlia was crossing the room carefully with an open beaker she failed to notice the loose end of the lone rug that sat upon the floor. Catching her toe on the rumpled edge she tripped and fell, the beaker flying straight to where I was cleaning up the counter. The glass shattered on impact upon the counter top, spraying me with an unnamed liquid. As soon as the chemical touched my skin I began to scream, the acid made every inch of the splattered area feel as if it were on fire. My first instinct was to wash myself with the nearest sink as soon as possible however my logic knew that it being a foreign chemical I should head straight to the emergency shower in the far left corner of the laboratory. My feet carried me hastily over to the shower and my hand reached out toward the hanging handle dangling in front of me. Cold water erupted from the shower head and spewed all over my lab coat and city clothes beneath. I hunched over into a small compact ball, and lay on the cold hard tiled floor. I knew that I should have rushed myself to the hospital that day but my body refused to get itself up from the freezing floor. My friend stood above me with a clipboard writing all the harsh effects that the venom all over my body was casting upon my poor frame. She scribbled ferociously without even stopping to help me from my grim misery. On that night I knew that my best friend was only involved in the science and not in my safety or my right to be helped in the face of disaster. Later that night, while in the emergency room of the nearby hospital my body began to morph in incredible ways and I realized that I had the ability to focus my vision to impossible lengths, I could see the nurse coming from a mile away and also discovered that my ears had begun to pick up the smallest of sound, I even heard the man in the next wing flat line before the nurses were even notified. One of the nurses was a kind old lady; she helped me recuperate though all of the horrible scabs that covered my whole back never hinting at any disgust as she realized that the things beneath my bandages were tied to the genetic makeup of a crow. I was forced into my new reality as Gretchen, my nurse informed me of my new body and predicament. Later in the month while in my private hospital room the news began to blare from the television that was placed just above my unmade hospital bed. A new terrorist was attacking the city of New York with a mystery illness that was concocted in a beaker. I knew in the deep of my heart that beaker was the same beaker that was once in the lab that my ex best friend and I were experimenting in. My thoughts raced and I wished to every kind of deity that the person who created this biological weapon had been someone other than her. Dahlia’s picture flashed before my eyes and a new anger rose from my core. How dare she decide to ruin my life and the rest of the population of my country! I rushed out of the bedroom where I had laid low for three weeks straight, not one visitor not even the one who I had wished had been there in the first place. My rage overtook my body and I began to run down the hallway. A few of my nurses tried to stop me in my rage but the dark wings that had sprung from my acid burned back knocked the ladies in their scrubs aside. I rushed out the door in search of the woman responsible for my condition. Running with all my might toward the edge of the lone rode next to the hospital I spread my wings out as far as they could go and pushed off of the ground with a mighty whoosh. The hospital shrunk from view as I flew farther up into the atmosphere, scanning the local area for I knew I had no choice but to stop her in her path of destruction. Searching forever to find Dahlia my wings growing tired and my eyes strained to remain on the lookout. Suddenly I flew over a house that I had known to be my second home when growing up. I slowly descended to the front yard of the old faded brown house on the corner of the street that I had grown up on. I knocked on the wooden door and waited for the person I used to consider my second mother to come open the door that I had walked through a million times over growing up. Dahlia’s mother, a dainty old lady creaked the door open and her wise eyes assessed me from the feet up. She burst into tears and begged me to save her daughter from her desire to rule the world with horrible mutations. I vowed to complete her wishes no matter what I had to do to finish the task. I thanked Dahlia’s mother and took off, her waving goodbye to me in the distance. I knew deep in my heart that Dahlia was a good person; she had just discovered a wicked kind of power, chemicals of mass destruction. Later that evening while flying around the many wooded areas that I suspected Dahlia to be hiding in I came across mysterious cabin in the woods, somewhere in a wooded town of Maine. I land softly on the ground and approached the wood cabin. As I entered the building I immediately felt a dark presence, I knew that my suspicion was correct. Dahlia emerged from the darkness her arm severely deformed resembling that of a crab claw. “Oh God, what have you done to yourself!?” I cried out in horror and disgust. “I have simply chosen a new look for myself. I see that you have gained some cool wings there, mind if I examine you?” Dahlia cackled with a wicked grin. I knew that I would have to do the opposite of what I truly wanted to do to this poor woman who used to be the vibrant young scientist that I had me many years before. I rushed at her clunky frame and attempted a knock down attack. This was not met very well when her huge crab like arm snapped me in its strong clamp. I struggled, thrashing around wildly, my wings having gotten caught in the tough mechanical crab grip. No amount of thrashing about could loosen her grip on my body. I could hear bones cracking around my rib region, but never once could I feel it for my body had gone numb from blood loss. With a huge swish I was thrown into the air and smacked against the cabins rough wood wall. I struggled to get up my now useless wings slumped against my back. Dahlia came rushing at me at an alarming rate. I ducked beneath the monstrous mutated arm that reached for me and darted toward the open front door. Suddenly I felt a tug from behind, a crack and a sickening rip from one of my two wings. Pain erupted from my back and I struggled to stand on my two feet. I risked a look behind me to witness the monster that used to be my best friend, my ripped off wing in the disgusting claw that used to be a human hand. Blood trickled down the hole that used to contain my dark wing and I struggled to stay conscious. Dahlia hung over me, peering at my body bleeding out not moving a muscle. “I’m sorry Cecilia. I really tried to be careful with that beaker.” Dahlia peered at me with heartbroken, sympathetic eyes. “I know you will never forgive me for what I have done to you, so therefore I can’t let you live like that. I am going to put you out of your misery, and I don’t think I will be able to let myself go on this way.” She held up her claw over my dying body and I closed my eyes for I knew what was to come next. I tried to remember the good things in my life as I wished that mutated people won’t be looked down upon in death. There was no pain, just black. Later on the news there were reports of a huge crab monster roaming around the major city of New York, where it was shot down by the local police force. The monster made no move of resistance, almost as if hoping for death to come to it. Cecilia was dearly missed and the blood samples that were taken from her in the hospital contained a serum. This serum was experimented on a few rats and it was recently discovered to contain the cure to cancer. Cecilia is remembered as the fallen guardian angel that is saving lives, one cancer patient at a time. |
