A letter to my child ... (Form: Epistle)
Tomorrow …

I watch you gaze, lost deep in thought,
and wonder at the world I’ve wrought.
Will it fulfill your hopes and dreams?
Will it be better than it seems
or will it fall short in your eyes?
Will you be forced to compromise?
To accept less than you deserve
as from the promised path you swerve?

I see you watch the clouds on high;
their shifting shapes go tumbling by
against a sky of perfect blue.
Will tomorrow it be there for you?
Will the progress that I sought to find
leave a legacy of loss behind?

You turn and look; I clearly see
the trust and faith you have in me.
I think about the damaged earth,
the land and seas that gave us birth,
and how we've taken without care,
wounding so much land and air.
We can’t continue to consume,
consigning our future to doom.

We have a debt we must repay
or it’s our children we betray.
I’ll do my best to pay, not borrow,
so that for you there’ll be tomorrow.
