Afraid to take a chance.
When I met my first girlfriend,
She was a mini mystery.
I took to calling her my "Sweetheart,"
We built a one year history.
She offered me her innocence,
But in shame I turned her down.
I was afraid to take the chance,
Now I'm feeling like a clown.

Gathered around the ol' black and white,
Watching the sixties evening news,
Woodstock was just a few miles away,
Jamming with the rhythm and blues.
Forbidden to leave the property,
That invisible rope kept me bound,
I was afraid to take the chance,
Now I'm feeling like a clown.

I married the sister of my best friend,
She thought I was her perfect man.
Better to be loved than to love,
A traditional life was our plan.
Though doomed to fail yet still she tried,
But I felt as if I'd drown.
I was afraid to take the chance,
Now I'm feeling like a clown.

We who've already crossed the line,
Have power over those to come.
The less they know the better we look,
Where's that logic coming from?
When given the chance to change the way,
The system keeps a good man down,
I was afraid to take the chance,
Now I'm feeling like a clown.

Melting into moonlight shadow,
I've wasted my many years of youth.
Don't live your life in fear like me,
In the light is found the truth.
Fight for what you know is right,
You'll eventually wear a crown.
Don't be afraid to take a chance,
And end up feeling like a clown.
