The birth and growth of Emily and her time lost in the woods. |
Protagonist Background Story Emily Nicole Wheeler was born in Orland, Florida, August 15, 1959. Her mother named her Nicole after her grandmother who died a tragic death along with her husband Charles. Sue, Em’s mom had always liked the name Emily, so she made that her only daughter, her first name. Emily was a loving and bright child. Sue and Wayne were proud parents. Em had a brother who was eighteen months older than her and his name was Brad. He too was such a cute baby who loved his sister so much that sometime he hugged her way to hard and made her cry. But then that was the way of a young sibling. By the time Emily was two she was talking in sentences and reading the very basic books, like the A B C, books. She was always wanting more books to read. Sue would by the small children’s books and Emily would read them and want more. By the time she was three, she was reading at the age level of six. She loved her mom and dad and brother very much. She called her mother Su and her dad Da. She tried to say Brads name too but it came out Bad. By then Brad was almost five and didn’t like that very much. Emily was always trying to keep up with Brad, and it would make her cry when she couldn’t be with him. Sue and Wayne both thought that was so adorable. Brad, not so much, but then he was young and he played with his friends who live on the block and were the same age as he. Every summer, Sue and Wayne and the kids would drive down to Caddo, Arkansas to see her grandmother, Sue’s mother. Emily loved her grandmother so much and called her Nana. During the summer of her fourth year, the whole family went walking into the forest which was behind Nana’s house. It was a great walking trip as many of the unusual flowers were blooming. Everyone was so busy looking around at the different things in the forest, they did not see Emily wander off. When they realized she was gone, they all started calling her name and looking for her. As the day grew later, Wayne decided to call the Sherriff and have him bring other people to help them look. Sue became so distraught, Doctor Burford had some ladies take her back to the house and give her a pill to help her relax. With that she fell asleep. In the meantime, night came and no Emily. Nana was very upset and said she was going to look in another area by herself. Nan knew those woods like the back of her hand. Once she was away from the rest of the people, she began talking with the faeries. Lilith, who was her favorite and Daphne, who was second in favor, were trying to help find Emily. They had gone off into a different part of the woods way from Nana. Nana looked at her watch and it was eleven-thirty at night. It wasn’t long after that, many faeries came to tell her they had found Emily and to follow them. When she got there, Lilith and Daphne were hovering over the little crying child. Nana picked her up and hugged her as if she would never let her go. Nana made her way back to the house with Emily and sent some men out to stop the rest of them from looking. She went into the house and Sue was so happy, she couldn’t even talk with crying. She told her daughter over and over how much they all loved her and would never let anything hurt or scare again. The entire town had been out to help find her and Nana told them to come back tomorrow and she would have a big lunch for all of them. Nana kept to her word and so did Sue. She had a big spread of food out on the lawn. She had hired people to place blankets down on the ground and each place had a picnic basket full of fried chicken, rolls, potato salad and sweet potato pie. For drinks she had coolers full of cokes, lemonade and water. Everyone enjoyed it all. Sue never, ever let Emily out of her sight again. Many said she was too overprotective, but Sue didn’t care. She would never forget the scare of losing her baby and she wasn’t going to let it happen again. And she remembered the nights when Emily would scream out while in a nightmare. Emily said she saw a monster, but Sue knew it was her imagination. After all she was only four and terrified. 795 words |
