Why lie to himself? He wasn't scared. He was petrified. Scrambling through the bush clueless was all he could do to keep the grizzly off of him. Run! Run like you mean it! His legs screamed in defiance as he urged them one stride more. In what were surely his last moments, he found it amusing that it was this same fear that kept him going. This shred of hope that he could do it. But he knew he couldn't. The roars and ragged breathing of the bear were too close to him. He knew it was gaining on him. In his haste, he misplaced his foot, slipping on a root and awkwardly falling. His ankle was broken. Sobbing, screaming, in fear and anger, he faced the Grizzly Bear. It was mighty to behold. A behemoth and protector of it's forest.
He gave one more wail.
A paw rose, cutting against the sun. Suddenly, claw against flesh. Against bone. And he was done.
