A fateful story below. How I won. This is also how I lost. Every word here is written by me: Karie Jana Muller.
Before you read: Don’t tell anyone.
A month ago: A longing for cash and the desire for fame. I had it all worked out how I would make the money and garner my deepest desire. If nothing else says something about me, I have wanted this all my life. One thing was left on my list.
Find a way to get famous.
And this is why I signed up for a contest. That endless month ago.
Two weeks ago: The wait pained me. My fame was coming. It was coming. I would get it. That was all before the fateful phone call. Yes, a phone call. That’s how I told them to contact me. By phone. I am trying to drum this into your head before we go on further.
It rang. Was I expecting it? Maybe. What could a teen do? Especially when facing the math homework of nightmares. Maybe I was expecting a friend to call me. Or maybe I wanted to hear a teacher say The test is canceled, Karie. It was all a big wish.
I rushed downstairs and grabbed the phone. Noting how I was the only one downstairs at the time, I counted myself lucky. Especially after I heard a monotonous female voice on the other end. “This is for Karie Muller for winning the contest. Please contact us within two weeks with your idea for the sitcom show. Failure to contact will cause the winning to be revoked and given to another member.”
It could’ve been a little showier in my opinion, but it didn’t matter. My dreams were about to come true. I would be a seventeen year old millionaire. I could feel a gleam light my face. Satisfaction hit me.
Two weeks. Sure thing. I could totally make it within two weeks. I would show them what I am made of.
One week ago: Nice of my teachers to pile on a dump truck’s worth of homework. I had to spend so much time each night slaving away to make it just so I could pass the oncoming tests. You know how it is. Tests are always nightmares. I did not have any time to think about the idea. Except for night time when I should’ve been sleeping. None of it was original anyways.
Yesterday: Maybe I should explain the week a little clearer. I will do it simply, just writing down all the progress.
Six days ago: Nothing done.
Five days ago: Nothing done.
Four days ago: Nothing done.
Three days ago: Nothing done.
Two days: You can probably guess by now.
One day ago: I will spare you from further repetition.
Just this morning: An idea finally came to me for a quality sitcom show. Hallelujah! One problem with that. It was the deadline day and I needed to hurry to get to school. I could not be late. I would just call on the way to school. It would be that simple.
The phone rang before I left. I stopped in my tracks, listening as the message rang clear. I listened breathlessly. It was a familiar message. “This is for Katie Muller for winning the contest. Please contact us within two weeks with your idea for the sitcom show. Failure to contact will cause the winning to be revoked and given to another member.”
My sister. She had usurped me. I was ruined.
