And on the other side of the wall.... |
I had expected to see a barren land with a few run-down houses when I had gotten to the opposite side. On the other hand, I was welcomed by a hard concrete floor. There weren’t run-down houses but there were huge houses and, oddly enough, tall ones as well. When I had made my way completely to the other side, I found myself looking around in awe. This was nothing like how it had been described to me over the years. I then noticed the girl who was standing a few feet from me. She looked at me very curiously. I saw that she looked me up and down and unconsciously, I looked down at my clothes. Compared to what the other girl was wearing, I knew that I must have looked horrible to her for my clothes were more like rags, crusty with mud, and my hair a tangled dirty mess. She was wearing a purple silk, or at least that’s what I had imagined silk to look like, dress and she looked much healthier than anyone I had ever met. There was a healthy glow to her cheeks and her eyelid, peculiarly enough, were the color of her dress. I was utterly confused. I had grown being taught that the other side of the wall lived in a worse condition than us but from what I could see, this place was in far better condition than where we lived. The girl looked even wealthier than our governors. How could that be? My thoughts were broken from the high, music like sweet voice of the girl. “My name is Violette Elizabeth Levine, pleased to meet you.” “Dove Carol,” I said shortly, scanning the girl. Violette… Her name sounded very fancy. Not only that but the way she said that simple sentence was quite, no, very elegant and posh. I wondered how I sounded to her. ‘I probably sound really stupid compared to her,’ I told myself. “And I’m Robin Isaiah Mattews,” Robin says abruptly from behind me. I could see a smile forming on Violette’s face. Right when I was about to speak up and ask her why she was smiling, she started talking. “I have been coming here for weeks now. I hoped again and again to meet someone from your side of the wall. Papa tells me I shouldn’t be curious about dangerous things but I could never understand him. All I wanted was less snobby friends.” She giggled at her own remark. I couldn’t really see what was so funny but Robin chuckled. “I thought you were all supposed to be dying,” I spat. I knew how mean it sounded but I couldn’t help it. I lived where both my parents had to work till all day and night as well as my brother to keep all of our family members alive. I didn’t need to find out more about her to know that she probably has a million different clothes and spends time choosing what to wear. The only thing between our two different worlds was the Wall and yet no one had known that there were people living in such leisure. How could this have been? How could the governors not have known? My head was swimming with so many things. Violette didn’t seem mad. On the other hand, she looked sad and slightly confused. She shook her head and there was a look in her eyes that I recognized immediately. It was pity. This just stoked the flames that raged in me. “We were never in trouble when it came to resources. Of course some have less than others but we all are not… dying.” She hesitated for a second before she said ‘dying’. Her words seemed to be very carefully chosen and gentle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We had met another who had been in the same position as us. Both of our groups were now traveling together to find new land, to start fresh. After weeks, we found the place of our dreams. The earth was rich and vast. On one side, there was a huge mountain and on the other, the plain stretched out. There were trees everywhere and animals so peaceful. There was green everywhere. The river in the middle was clear as crystal. “At last, we have finally found our new home,” one said. Though none of us said anything aloud, we all knew we were thinking the same thing. We would no longer need to move anymore. This was what we had been looking for. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
