A poem inspired by watching an elder gentleman singing in his car.

“I Watched as You Were Singing”

I watched as you were singing,
Your proud voice slurred by time,
Heart pounding out the rhythm,
of memories stirring and reliving,
the words of that old classic rhyme.

I watched as you were singing,
while you parked by some old store.
You raised the anthem playing,
singing loud and tapping time, lost in fates forever gone,
Just like you’ve done before.

I watched as you were singing,
White hair combed back, receding,
Old eyes that trust old notions, and old remembered songs,
Deep breath! Chest out! Eyes front! Your strength in every word.
The song retrieving memories, from years ago unheard.

I watched as you were singing,
So strong, at ease and free,
not like that young man long ago,
who lost in mud and trees and truths, a myth from long before,
A song of time reliving, pride and death and war.
