Word Weavings

Originally, a spoken craft
where wordsmiths spun vivid tapestries
of sound and story meant to inform,
explain, defend or entertain;
the bards who spoke of histories
and the folk who echoed refrains.

Sounds reverberating down through time,
the silences
as important as the words,
for in those spaces between,
memory reflects, hearts thud to a beat:
we breathe in the hearing.

Beneath the surface of word and story,
swim oceans of meaning, deeper still
lies the bottom of the poetic sea
where mud-meanings ooze a darker tale.

Wordwaters drown the unwary,
flash flood away the indifferent,
wash clean the cynic.

Sounds caught in a breeze of words,
wafting in a stream of song can also
be carved in granite, where rocks,
like slings and arrows, can both protect
or harm. Sticks and stones can hurt,
caught in an eddy of the mind,
swirling now to ingrained refrain.

Weapons, lullabies, promises kept
lulled or goaded and women wept
tears of joy or tears of sorrow
for uttered words last past the morrow
.
