Poem for Short Shots Contest
At long last…the day I have been waiting for.

It’s a dastardly plan…rotten to the core

I’ve been working this dull and underpaid job, 9 to 5

Doing anything and everything each month, just to survive

But today is different; I have sent out the perfectly crafted email

To con people of their savings – euros, pounds and dollars; just the thought of it would make a decent man turn pale

My scam has worked so far; four individuals have fallen for it, hook, line and sinker

Maybe all the schooling and financial education I’ve gotten has paid off; I no longer need to be an overworked banker

Just as my eyes light up with greed after glancing at the laptop screen at the fools that have succumbed to my master plan,

An armoured van pulls up right outside my office building

Unknown to me, three Kevlar-suited police officers armed with semiautomatic rifles storm the offices below, led by an equally heavyset and well-equipped man

Truth is, I was so lost in my dreaming

That I forgot to conceal my IP address

Now I’ve realised but little do I know they will reach my room in minutes

The newly-added stress, oh the stress!

I fumble for my car keys as I prepare to head down to get in my car and drive off, pushed to my very limits

And before I know it, the next second, the door to my office is knocked off its hinges

‘Get down, get down!’ is the next few and probably last words I’ll ever hear in my office

Without even time to erase my tracks, I am caught with sufficient evidence to put me behind bars; the nearest subordinate, my secretary
cringes

But something is still amiss

As I lower my body and am being handcuffed, I look around my room

How did the cops know and respond so quickly, I wonder

As voices around me thunder,

My eyes chance upon a tiny contraption fitted with lenses of some sort, recording me as I secured my own doom

Alas! It was thrilling while it lasted.

But now, my future is wasted.
