An April Fool's Day entry for the Daily Flash Fiction Contest. April isn't just a month. |
April Fool "April fool!" April got up and started pacing around Dr. Drew Blue’s office. “My first name is April. And my last name is Fool. But I’m not a fool.” Drew smiled as he finished writing something on the tablet in his hands. “No one is calling you a fool. You are the only one who is doing that.” “No, I’m not. Everyone is calling me that. Especially on this day.” April sat back down in the chair opposite drew. “I know what you are going through. With a name like Drew Blue, I went through a lot as you have. Isn’t that why you chose me as your therapist.” April started to shake her head slowly from side to side. “You don’t know what I have went through. My childhood was bad. I was always being teased. Especially on this day. It got even worse in my teen years.” “Now that I’m an adult it’s a little bit better.” April continued after a few seconds. “But it’s still bad.” After a few more seconds April continued. “With a last name like Fool, why did my parents name me April?” “You know they named you that. They named you April because you were born on this day. It was only after they saw your Birth Certificate that they realized they had made a big mistake. And by then it was too late.” Drew glanced up at the clock on his office wall. “I can see this session is almost over. We can talk about why you never changed your name at our next session.” Word Count = 263 |
