a story between a boy and girl who meet over the internet
At 5:30 A.M. one eye lazily opens as my alarm blasts in my ears, waking me up from a peaceful slumber. Because I have to get somewhere on time all the many dreams are lost: dreams of what could have happened, of worlds where I made no mistakes, worlds where I had astonishing abilities which could help people, and worlds where I could finally rest. My destination isn't even all that far away but still I'm awake at 5:30. I turn off my alarm on my phone and check my messages in case any problems arose from last night. I lazily roll out of bed absolutely exhausted from a night of doing nothing but playing Metroid. Half asleep, I walk to the restroom tripping over my own feet along the way, causing me to almost fall face first to the ground. Before entering the restroom I open the door next to it and planning ahead, I grab the top towel. I enter the restroom where I remove my clothing that I was sleeping in to take a shower. After my shower I opened the door and steam wafted out of the restroom flowing up to the upper reaches of the two story house. Towel wrapped around my waist, I walk back to my room, freshly cleaned ready to face the day. The most difficult part was resisting the urge to lay back into bed and get a few more minutes of restful and beautiful dreams before needing to leave to get done what needs to get done, to go to the one place where dreams die before they are made and where creativity and individuality are stifled out by the overbearing hand of the man or woman in charge, I have to go to school.
I walk down the stairs after getting dressed for the day. Grabbing a bowl from the cabinet I place it down on the counter when my phone lights up with a message from a friend online. The message reads “morning nullus” I reply with “morning kubera. How did you sleep?” Kubera is my best friend in the world. We met a few years ago in a group chat that I was invited in by a friend who went by windwaker373. With eighteen other people in the chat it was awkward to try to get into the conversation and after a few weeks when it felt like I would never make it in this group I hit it off with kubera. Our relationship started off by her making a reference which I got instantly and named the show season and episode which shocked everyone. The quiet guy in the back of the chat got an obscure reference to a show no one has seen in years the chat shut up and kubera who was a little startled decided to test me again this time with a book reference which I got series title, name of the book, section, chapter, page, and line it was said on without skipping a beat. The chat went silent again. I was scared this was a chat that never went silent even in the dead of night their was someone talking in the chat and to be the one who silenced the chat was a terrifying thought. I was getting so nervous so I typed “ D-d-did I do something wrong?” And Kubera replied “ what no we’re just shocked no one has gotten my references before much less a noob to the chat. What’s your name noob” “nullus” I said. Kubera and I hit it off immediately after that happened becoming good friends making references, sharing music, saying quick witted jokes, and having the most fun ever. When I was talking to Kubera the world melted away and it was just the two of us talking to each other through our phone screens. I trusted her and she trusted me. Eventually we started complaining about problems that came from life and school and we quickly became the best of friends and it is awesome having a friend who was just as quick witted as me. She replied to my question “on my stomach” and we both laughed at her joke.
“Ugh I have school today” I complained “those guys need to get a hobby” Kubera scoffed “they do have one bullying me” I typed after taking a bite of my breakfast “what about your problem kube any old habits returning?” our private chat just went quiet no dots warning that a message was coming to my phone. I accidentally crossed a line and when she goes quiet like this it just assures what I asked. I now knew that she was taking a blade to her flesh to release herself from the pain of verbal abuse that she recieves from her fellow students. I understand her pain but I don’t understand why she would use that form of release. Even after she explained how it get her mind off the words I still don’t get it but I won’t press her on it because I don’t want her to leave me alone without my best friend. I then place down my phone and finish getting ready for school--the bane of my existance where abuse happens on a daily baisis and everyone has to fit into a cookie cutter mold or be out casted as a failure.
