3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia |
The 3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia who is also former Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI). Born on Thursday, June 25, 1936 in Parepare, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Habibie is the third child of eight siblings. During the Japanese occupation, Habibie's family was forced to migrate to Lanra'e, about 25 kilometers south of Parepare. In 1948 his father was appointed head of Agriculture of East Indonesia, their family moved to Ujung Pandang. When Habibie was 13 years old, his father passed away. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Bandung, Indonesia. In May 1955, after several months as a student of the Bandung Institute of Technology, Habibie went to Germany and studied at the Technische Hochschule in Aachen. Ten years later, Hasri Ainun Besari's husband obtained his PhD. That same year he got a job at Hamburger Flugzeubau, an aircraft company that later became Messerschmitt Bolkow Blohm, and based in Hamburg, Germany. Habibie's career in this company skyrocketed and successfully served as vice president of technology. At the peak of his career, in 1973, at the request of President Soeharto, Habibie was summoned back to the country. In Indonesia Habibie serves as President of The International Islamic Forum for Science, Technology, and Human Resource Development (IIFTIHAR). In addition, a series of honors received, among others, as an honorary member of the airline's Lembaha flight and the German Aerospace in 1983, honorary member of The Royal Aeronautical Society of London in 1983, member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1985, member of the Academie Nationale de I 'Air et de I'Espace France in 1985, von Karman Award from ICAS in 1992, and a member of the US Academy of Engineering. While the position as Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia began to be held on Wednesday, March 11, 1998. On Thursday, May 21, 1998, Habibie became the 3rd President of Indonesia to replace Soeharto. He became president until the election of the 4th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid, on Wednesday 20 October 1999. After he was no longer president, Habibie devoted himself to the development of human resources and the upholding of human rights in Indonesia by establishing The Habibie Center, an institution that became an institution for the study and advocacy of the issues of the development of democratic life and human rights, development of human resources, science and technology, media development and marine resources. |
