First steps on the Moon

Light as a feather we skipped
The starkness a beauty of its own
Over the valley we dipped
As our skills of movement we hone

The light glows from our home afar
A blue marble, incandescent and warm
Brighter than any star
The white specks that keep us from harm

Shadows so dark and the other half so bright
Uneven and barren is the land
We run and jump with all our might
Frolic and fun on that sand

A distant shine we spot moving our way
Joy gives way to a building fear
Closer it comes and down we lay
An unholy hissing we hear

One last vision of our heavenly abode
No welcome on this soil of this we are sure
Our confidence and jubilation erode
The final sleep that has no cure
