About a rare book. Flash Fiction contest entry.
There was once a book named HH. Now, you may think that it is very unusual for a book to have a name rather than a title, but this was a very unusual book. In fact, it was a very rare book in more than one sense. How did it become so rare and unusual? I'm glad you asked.

Mr. Harold Hogsworth was a magnificent writer of children's books. His books were loved by children all around the world. All of his books were about delightful animals and the children they talked to and played with. The title of each book was also the name of the animal featured in it, such as "Lonzo Lizard" and "Patsy Pelican."

It was said that the books (and perhaps Mr. Hogsworth himself) were magical! Many children had all of his books but were waiting for the book that would be the most magical of all. Mr. Hogsworth spent most of his life writing that book, getting every word and every illustration just right. He finally announced that it was complete and he had named it HH, but there was only one copy and it had a very special purpose.

When he died soon after, the book was never found. Most assumed there never really was such a book and it was eventually forgotten.

Harriet Henderson loved to read, but, unable to afford new books, her mother often bought them at Goodwill. Harriet found a dirty and ragged old book there one day and asked if she could have it. Her mother agreed and bought it.

When Harriet opened the bag at home, she was astonished to see that the book was now bright and beautiful with the title in large clear letters: "Harriet Human" by Harold Hogsworth.

HH was very pleased with himself!
