The Beginning “Grrrrr!” “Grrrr yourself,” Sandy said, “It’s about time you said something.” “Like what?” came a voice from the open closet. “Like why are you hiding in my closet?” “I’m not hiding. I live here!” “You didn’t live there yesterday, because I pulled the whole thing apart looking for my green shoes.” “Can I live here now?” “Are you going to keep trying to scare me?” “Is it working?” “No.” “Can I come out? It’s kind of cramped in here.” “Are you weird looking?” “I don’t know. Where I come from everybody looks like this.” “OK, well, am I weird looking?” “Yes.” “OK. I’m ready, come out.” A very small blue ball of light floated out of Sandy’s closet. “That’s you? Where did you come from?” My parents sent me down to keep me safe while they went on a dangerous mission. I think I got my coordinates wrong. Is this South Pole?” “Massachusetts, North America.” “I flunked Earth Geography too.” “Will they be able to find you?” Sandy said, in alarm. “Oh sure!” I’m almost always lost. Can I stay? I’ll be gone in a transton, I promise!” “How long is a transton, in earth time?” “Um... about... let’s see... not much, I was going to sleep while I was at the South Pole, but I’d rather not have to, if I can hang out with you!” “I think people would get suspicious if I had a ball of blue light following me around.” “Well, I could pretend I was on that thing around your neck. That could look earthy, right?” “Hum, my necklace, yes. That could work. OK!” “I can learn all about earth!” “So how long is a transton?” Sandy asked again. “It’s so short really, only about, ah, eighty-two earth years?” And another Dynamic Duo is created. |
