“Tell me the truth.”

“I am telling the truth!” eight year old Sam said, “I saw it with my own eyes!”

“Maybe something caught your eye and it just looked like it was...” Dad started.

“No Dad, I saw it. At first I thought it was a rock, but it was different because it was such a weird color.”

“Color?”

“Kind of pinky blue. You don’t see many rocks that are pinky blue. I was going to bring it home and show it to Mom because she likes pink stuff.”

“You were going to bring it home? How big was it?”

“It was about as big as my baseball only not round. It was sitting at the edge where those trees are.”

“Ok...”

“So I walked over and I went to pick it up and it squeaked.”

“It squeaked?”

“Yeah, like squeeeak, and I jumped back. Then it got bigger.”

“Bigger?”

“Just a little bigger, like a basketball size. But then I could see the windows and stuff.”

“Could you see in them?”

“Not really, just wiggly stuff. Then it lifted right up off the ground and it kept going up and up until it disappeared. Well, until I couldn’t see it anymore.”

“Can you show me where you saw this?”

“Sure! Come on!” off they went.

On the porch Mom and Sandra were sitting in the chairs listening to the conversation.

“Do you see why he never gets in trouble with Dad? He can talk Dad into believing anything,” Sandra said, sourly.

As Mom watched the baseball sized shape hovering over the trees in the neighbor’s yard, she found herself unable to respond.

After all these years, her people had finally come back for her. How was she going to tell them she didn’t want to leave earth anymore.
