Winner! Daily Flash Fiction 8/17/21 |
Even the Score âSomebody is at the door! The door! Door!â I kept trying to tell everyone, but no one listened. I tried again. âSomebody! At! The! Door!â then âThe door! The door!â Perhaps I wasnât loud enough. âDoor! Door! Door!â I exclaimed as loud as I could. âWould you please shut up!â Ruby yelled at me. âQuiet! Quiet! Quiet!!â Message delivered, Ruby went back to bed. No one came to check. Definitely need to wake up these folks. I jumped on the bed, tore off the covers, threw Julieâs pillow to the floor. Julie stirred, then sat up. âHey! Stop that. What is the problem?â âThe door! The door! Check the door!â âI donât understand. Now go away, leave us alone.â âWhat? Whatâs all the commotion?â Steve mumbled, half asleep. âJadeâs all agitated. I donât understand what sheâs saying. Iâm going back to sleep.â Steve got out of bed. Finally, someone to check the door! Steve stumbled to the front door. No one there. âReally?â He looked at me. âYou woke us up for nothing? Come with me, young lady.â Steve pushed me out the back door, slid it shut, then disappeared. I looked inside. Ruby stood near the door. A big cat smile on her face. She mouthed the words, âThe game continues. Score 1 for Ruby.â Then she disappeared. So it was her! That little devil. She canât get the best of this dog. I scratched on the door. Ruby came over. âLet me in, you furry devil.â No response. She laid down to watch. âYouâre a little troublemaker. Let me in!â Louder this time, just in case she didnât hear. Steve came to the door, slid it open. âAre you still barking? Get in here.â I went in. Ruby got booted out. Score now tied. Jade 4, Ruby 4.
