Remembering what it felt like wishing I was GROWN! My ten-year-old great-grandson is ready |
I Can't Wait to B Grown! None of us as children had any real idea of what growing up and being called grown would mean. We begged God and mothers to just get grown. Couldn't wait to be twenty-one (21). Declared our independence as soon as humanly possible and struck out on our own. And then, we ran into what it meant to be grown, RESPONSIBLE (no one to call to get you out of trouble), ACCOUNTABLE (pay up, you did the deed, and now you pay the cost), FREE (to do as you will and suffer the consequences), and INDEPENDENT (you and you alone is liable for your deeds and actions)! Then it became clear what our parents were telling us, "If I were you, I would enjoy being a child while you can." Of, if you are so grown, why haven't you moved out already?" Or, my favorite is "I can't wait for you to get grown so that you can learn what it means to be grown!" My greatest chuckles have come from the confessions of those who are now grown, remembering out loud how they just didn't know what it meant to be grown -- children, bills, responsibility, accountability -- never free, and definitely not independent. LOL Being or getting to claim being grown is a lesson that cannot be taught, but learned very quickly when you suddenly find that momma and daddy remember and honor your desire to be GROWN! Got grown children who continue to amaze you every single day? Those children that you can have a rational conversation with that brings you pleasure are the same ones that you wanted to strangle between thirteen (13) and twenty-one (21). They have now conquered, grown, and are going through just what WE went through with them. HAVE FUN WATCHING. Peace and blessing to you and yours always! |
