Entry for 05.09.2022 Daily Flash Fiction Challenge. Including, "Where am I?"
“Where am I?”
She doesn’t know how to answer that, at least not in a way that he will understand.
At least not right away, though she gives him a soft smile anyways, pulling her legs close and letting her chin rest on her knees.
“A dream, maybe? Or a vision. I am still not sure of it myself.”
He blinks, confusion blooming more solidly as she watches. She feels a little sorry for him; empathy bleeds pain through her as she remembers when she first came to here as well. She sighs a little, glances around the fields that never end and the single Tree that never seems to leave her sight.
“It is different for everyone.”
“What about you?”
She blinks, instantly focuses on him as he stares back. The confusion is still there but there is concern blooming too now, worry for her as he reads between the lines and notes that she didn’t include herself in the word. She almost wants to laugh at his consideration; entirely lost and confused and still latching onto the concern for a stranger.
She sighs again instead, smiles at the ground and shrugs without giving a solid answer.
Shifting brings her attention back to him and she glances up to find him crossing his legs and settling down next to her. It is curious; most instantly tried to figure out where they were, taking in their surroundings as they focused on getting out or waking up. But instead of all of those, he just adjusts himself and watches her for a moment, eyes that hold topaz taking in her entirely.
“What?”
“Nothing,” he shakes his head, eyes turning to the Tree as he frowns at the branches, “It’s nothing."
The dream ends before his next breath.
