That story was a fake.
I think it all went downhill fast
when I first realized
that many things I thought were real
were just a bunch of lies.

There really was no Santa Claus.
That story was a fake.
Who knew what other fibs they told?
Who knew? For goodness sake!

Well, I suspected all along,
at least I had a feel,
that Easter Bunny tale they gave
did not strike me as real.

But Santa Claus I did believe.
At least I wanted to.
I bet you fell for that one too.
Please tell me, didn’t you?

But once I knew it wasn’t true,
things never were the same.
How could I trust in anyone?
Was everything a game?

And even when I knew the truth,
I went and played along.
I didn’t want the gifts to stop.
I thought that would be wrong.

The next time that I lost a tooth
I did just what they said.
I cleaned the tooth and placed it by
the pillow on my bed.

I knew there was no Tooth Fairy
but I knew what to do.
I’d take whatever prize they gave.
Let’s face it, wouldn’t you?

In time I learned the facts of life,
as we all have to do.
But I still question every day
what’s false and what is true.
