Always be alert

I watch them from my bed.
They think I’m fast asleep.
But although I may appear half dead,
Both ears are cocked, one eyed I peek.

Perhaps someone will say a word I know,
Like cheese, a treat or even walk.
But they sit together in a row,
Silently watching the firelight glow.
