An epic poem for the 13 Poetic Days of Halloween Contest
Count Dracula pulled out the stake as quickly as he could
with his bloody, trembling hands
he crawled across the punishing ground
surviving only because his enemy missed his ancient heart
As hero of the underworld, he was determined to escape final death

Making his way to a whispering forest
he knew he must take shelter before dawn
Weakly, he entered the gathering of welcoming trees
he knew he must find blood achingly soon
a dank cave beckoned in the waning moonlight
Once inside, a bubbling well called to him, "Come, come"
like a sparkling miracle, it continued chanting
inviting him to drink
Desperate, he cupped his quivering palms
and drank the quenching water with a thirst he had never known
Though it was not blood, it was the Elixir
this Spring of Life, this Fountain of Youth
was his new ticket to immortality
and he craved blood no more
That day he slept in the cave, strong and happy, as life awoke on the forest floor.
