Unforgettable

“I figured it out.”

“What?”

“I said; I figured it out.”

“And I said ‘what?’ what did you figure out…”

“Oh, sorry, I thought you didn’t hear me.”

“How could I not hear you? you’re sitting right there.”

“Well, you know, sometimes you tell me to stop daydreaming. Like when you were telling me about that football game…”

“Baseball.”

“Huh?”

“I was telling you about a baseball game. My favorite team won and you didn’t even acknowledge that I was talking.”

“Acknowledge? Who are you Mr. Vocabulary?”

“Well at least I use the big words in sentences where they fit…”

“Are you insinuating that I don’t?”

“Good one! You get an A for that big word!”

“Too bad I spelled it wrong on the test…”

“Well, you don’t have to spell a word if you’re talking. You just need to know where it fits. Mrs. Shepard is brutal about spelling, but only because she’s a teacher. If she let us off spelling things right, she’d probably get fired.”

“I forget she’s a teacher sometimes. She’s nice, not like Downy.”

“Good gravy! He scares the pants off me! I don’t have any classes with him, but even when he walks around the halls, he’s scary!”

“Yeah, try having him for Math!”

“Yikes!

“So, what was it you figured out?”

“Huh?”

“You said you figured it out. What? What did you figure out?”

“Huh… I can’t remember now…”

The two boys burst into laughter.

“Boys! Keep your voices down in the hallways!”

The boys looked up; it was Mr. Downey! They both laughed louder! When the principal heard their explanation in her office, she burst out laughing too!

Mr. Downey never understood why the principal always smiled at him so funny when he walked by her… even eight years later…
