The Big Gift

Kat sat glumly on a hay bale. Denny spotted her there.

“What’s up sis?” he asked as he approached.

“Christmas Day is so slow coming this year. I’m dying to know if I got the big gift I asked for.”

“I know where they hid it,” Denny hinted.

“I looked in the barn, the pasture and the paddock, it’s not there!”

“Guess you’ll have to wait until the day then,” her brother teased.

Kat jumped up and grabbed him. Before he could react, she had him in a headlock.

“Tell me, or I tell Ma and Pa you bin spyin’ on them!” she yelled in his ear.

“In that case, I definitely won’t tell you!”

“I know where yours is, if you tell me about mine, I’ll tell you about yours.”

“Won’t do you no good, I found it days ago in the loft.”

“Oh. Please big brother, I caint stand the suspense!” his sister said, giving him puppy dog eyes.

“Oh no you don’t,” he protested as he covered his eyes by pulling his ball cap way down low.

“If I tell ya, you gotta remember to act real surprised when they give it to ya Christmas morning,” Denny said as if considering it.

Kat gave him a hopeful look.

“Nope, can’t chance it!” he finally said.

“You skunk, you dirty dog, you...”

“What are you two carryin’ on about! Yer scarin’ the chickens!” They both turned toward the voice. Their mother stood there with a full basket of eggs. Denny went over and took it from her.

“Just fussin’ about Christmas and big gifts.”

“Fuss too much, they may have to go back where they came from, and your pa and I will hafta assign extra chores to both of you.”

“Okay Ma,” they said.
