Brownies

Russell walked in, finding his wife, Jane, working at the counter, frowning. “Hey,” he said, “what ya making?”

“Brownies, I thought…”

“You thought? Isn’t that pan in front of you full?”

“Yes, but something’s wrong. It tastes terrible.”

“You eat raw stuff!?” Russ said, shocked. Of course he had never cooked anything, with the exception of backyard grill stuff. He’d grown up the only male child in a family of five kids.

“It’s a new recipe, I got from Sharon, it tastes terrible!”

“Maybe it’ll taste better once it’s cooked?”

“Well, I suppose…” she put it in the oven. “We’ll find out in about twenty minutes.”

Nineteen minutes later Russ popped back in the kitchen. “I smell brownies!” and he reached for the oven door, opening it a bit.

“Don’t open it till the timer goes off!

He slammed it shut! “Did I wreck them? They smell wonderful!”

“Really? I thought they smelled a little weird…” the timer started pinging. “Well, here goes.” She took the pan out, wrinkling her nose a bit.

“They smell amazing!” Russ said, excited!

“They smell weird.” She immediately flipped the pan and the entire block of brownie dropped on the wax paper on the counter.

“You don’t usually do that, do you?” Russ asked.

“There’s something off here, I need to know what!”

Waiting a few minutes, to cool them off, she cut two chunks out, handing one to Russ. Both bit in.

“Yuk” she said, “I thought putting coffee in was weird, but I thought it was to enhance the chocolate or something…”

“Wowie Zowie!” said Russ, “coffee brownies! I love them!!!”

Jane made them often every year for the rest of their lives. Russ really loved them. Jane never even tried one more of the creepy things… Coffee brownies, she thought, yuk!
