The Beast from the sea Rev. 13 |
BSF Lesson 17 Questions First Day: Read Lesson 16 Notes. The notes and lecture fortify the truth of the passage for understanding and application to daily life. 1. How did the lecture give you hope or encouragement about God and His authority? What points in the notes about the war between God and Satan did you find interesting, challenging, or encouraging? Second Day: Read Revelation 13:1-4. John saw a beast come from the sea. 3. Describe John’s vision of the dragon and the beast. What stood out to you the most? The beast came out of the sea. It had seven heads and ten horns. Each horn had a diadem crown and each head had a blasphemous name. The beast was like a leopard, bu5 had bear’s feet and a lion’s mouth. The dragon gave the beast his power, throne, and authority/rulership. The beast had a lethal head wound that had been healed. The world worshipped the dragon and the beast. I was struck by the brutality of the vision. Lions and bears are killers, and leopards are swift and cunning, sometimes used as a symbol of judgment. Each head has a blasphemous name. It’s like Satan is advertising he’s here. There’s no doubt he’s behind everything. 4. In what ways do the beast and dragon counterfeit or imitate Jesus and His relationship with God the Father? (See also Matthew 11:27; 28:18-20; John 1:18; 20:26-29; and Hebrews 1:3.) The dragon gives the beast authority, power, and his throne. The beast is to make and teach followers. He had a fatal head wound that healed. 5a. How did the world respond to the beast, and what did the people say? People were filled with wonder and amazement. The whole world followed and worshipped the beast, also worshipping the dragon. They said, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war on it/him?” b. What influences deceive or lead people, including you, away from God today? They care about themselves. The love of power and the desire to have everything they want. c. Tell your group about a situation in which you stood your ground in Christ. What was the result? There was the time Vicky got upset because I said women shouldn’t be preachers. I pointed out to her that the belief was biblical. She was not happy. Third Day: Read Revelation 13:5-10. The beast received power and authority. 6. a. What kind of words came from the beast’s mouth, and what power did he receive? The beast’s words were haughty. It spoke blasphemies against God, His Name, and His dwelling in Heaven, and those who lived there. The beast received power to make war on the saints and conquer them. It was given authority over every people and tribe and nation and tongue. b. Who will worship the beast? Everyone on Earth whose name isn’t written in the Lamb’s Book of life. 7. What is the Lamb’s Book of Life? Whose names are recorded in there? (See also John 1:12-13, 29; Philippians 3:20-21; 4:3; and Revelation 3:5; 20:12-15.) It’s a record of all who believe in Jesus. 8. a. From verse 10, what will God’s people face, and what will they need to endure their suffering? (See also Psalm 1:1-3 and 2 Timothy 3:16.) To be hurt, enslaved, and slain. Every kind of attack and misery and death. They will need to rely on the Lord and trust Him. They need to marinate in the word, to equip them in this time. b. Read John 15:18-27; 2 Corinthians 6:4-10; Colossians 1:9-14; and 1 Timothy 6:11-12. What biblical truth about endurance has helped you endure challenges through God’s Word, power, hope, and promises? Fourth Day: Read Revelation 13:11-18. A second beast came from the earth. 9. From verses 12-15, what kind of power was given to the second beast? It had authority to act on the behalf of the first beast. It made the earth worship the first beast with the healed wound. The second beast publicly performed signs, even calling down fire from heaven. It deceived the people on earth, and forced people to make an image to the first beast with the head wound. The second beast was empowered to give breath to the image, so i5 could speak and kill any who refused to worship it. The second beast forced everyone to have a mark on their right hand or forehead, so they couldn’t buy or sell without it. 10.a. What was the intent behind the power exercised by the second beast? (See also Mark 13:22.) To provide a counterfeit of God, and force the people to accept it as God. The beast with the healed wound counterfeits Jesus death and resurrection. The second beast breathing on the image to give it a semblance of life, while God Is the breath of life. God provided fire to burn sacrifices for Elijah, David, and Solomon, and provided the ability to Elijah and the two witnesses. The beast is declaring himself to be a prophet. Placing a mark on everyone is a corrupt action, with the mark a copy of the seal God puts on His children. b. In contrast with the beast’s evil power, explain the purpose of God’s holy power in: Moses (Exodus 7:1-5) God provided His power to Moses, so Pharaoh would see Moses as being God. God made Aaron His prophet, to speak Elijah (1 Kings 18:30-39) Jesus (John 11:41-44; 20:30-31; Acts 2:19-21) 11.a. What was the mark given to those who followed the beast, and what benefits came with it? The name of the beast or its number on the right hand or forehead. Those with the mark can buy and sell. b. What mark (seal) is given to those who follow Jesus Christ, and what benefits come with it? (See also 1 Corinthians 2:9-16 and Ephesians 1:13-14.) We are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise. c. How does God protect His people? Tell of a time God kept you from being deceived. Fifth Day: Reread Revelation 13:1-18. The second beast received deceitful and deadly power. 12.a. Name the members of the unholy trinity that appears in this chapter. Why is it significant that the second beast looked like a lamb? The dragon, the first beast and the second beast. b. Read Colossians 3:15-17. How does the work of the Holy Trinity of God contrast with the work of the deceptive trinity that John saw in Revelation 13? 13. a. What warnings does God give against false prophets and counterfeit leaders? (See also Deuteronomy 13:1-4; Matthew 7:15-20; Mark 13:22-25; and 1 John 4:1-3.) b. From verse 18, what will God’s people need? Where will they find it? Wisdom. Jesus. Sixth Day: Review Revelation 13. Satan will never defeat God or His eternal plan. 14.How has the all-powerful God equipped you through His Word to combat the enemy? What hope, strength, and encouragement have you received from God’s Word?
