Minky's hunger leads to trouble. 300 words |
Catastrophes Happen Minky smelled a wonderful smell. She traced it to a truck with a blue cat on it. The back door was open a crack. With her skinny Siamese body, it was a matter of seconds before she wormed her way inside. The smell was stronger, so Minky followed her nose. Climbing the crates, she finally got to one where a piece was hanging out. Using a deft paw, she latched on and pulled. Without warning, the piece bit back. “Yowl!” Minky protested and leaped back. Tumbling from the top, she landed on her feet. “Hey, what’s going on here?” a human voice roared as the door swung open. If she hadn’t been so hungry, Minky would have run. As it was, she cowered in the dark hoping the monster would forget her. “Aw, you poor thing, you’re skin and bones! Come with me and we’ll have lunch!” He picked her up and carried her to the cab of the truck. He fed Minky fish paste from his sandwiches until she could eat no more. She fell asleep in his lap. She was still asleep as he did his lobster delivery to the seafood restaurants in town. He got home late, and Minky was wide awake and ready to wander. He fashioned a leash from a spare boot lace and carried her inside. The next morning, he was off to pick up shrimp. His boss was captivated when he caught sight of her. “She could be our mascot! I’ll have a harness made for her with the company logo. When you’re done, come to the office so I can measure her.” Minky understood human speech well, and she was having none of that! When the truck stopped at a light, she leaped out the open window and was gone. |
