Lawn Mowers

“So, what do you think?”

“I don’t trust them.”

“Why not?”

“Well, look at them. They’re a bunch of teenagers! They’re telling everybody that they’re smart, know what they’re doing, and everybody should hire them to do outside jobs.”

“It’s a business Dad…”

“Yes, but anything can be called a business. They’re teenagers, how much experience could they have?”

“They’re been doing lawns since they were old enough to rake.”

“That can’t be true…”

“It is, Jeff’s father has a lawn business, he hired Jeff and Harry as soon as they were old enough to help.”

“How old?”

“I don’t know, they started as rakers. They raked the gardens, and raked up the cut grass.”

“Huh…”

“When they got older, they learned to use the hand mowers. Once they got big enough, Jeff’s father taught them how to drive the big mowers.”

“How old are they?”

“My age.”

“You’re not old enough to drive!”

“Apparently you can, as long as you don’t drive on real roads. They started driving mowers in the cemetery.”

“Oh. I didn’t know that.”

“So… what do you think?”

“Well, if they can’t drive them, how do they get the mowers to people’s houses?”

“Harry’s brother is twenty-three. He does the driving and picking up.”

“That doesn’t sound like a good job…”

“He’s in college. He drives them, then sits in the truck and studies.”

“Huh…”

“Come on! The worst that could happen is we have a crappy looking lawn for a week… give them a try!”

“You’re right. OK I’ll hire them, but once, just to see how it goes. This week?”

“You won’t regret it, Dad!! I’ll go tell Harry!”

But he did regret it. Half way through the job they all raided his refrigerator... then six years later Mandy married Harry…
