Dessert Disaster

Eve hummed as she mixed up the batter for a cake. It was the first time she was having her in-laws to dinner. She placed the pan of batter in the preheated oven and set the timer.

To ease her anxiety, she cranked up her favorite music. She got so caught up in it, she didn’t even hear the bell of the timer.

The smoke detector shrieked. That piercing noise got her attention.

“OH, no! Dessert is ruined! What can I do now?” she gasped as she pulled what could only be described as a burnt sacrifice out of the oven. Eve ran around opening windows to remove the smell from the house.

She stood looking at the cinder. Then a memory of her mother came to her. She removed the cake from the pan and began to cut off the burnt outer layer.

She made sure every speck of burnt cake was removed. It didn’t leave her with much, but what was left, she cubed into small pieces. She mixed whipped topping and instant caramel pudding powder together.

Folding the cake cubes into the mixture, she put the result in a fluted cake pan. This pan went into the fridge.

“It’s time to begin the prep for the main meal,” she told herself as she began to peel, steam and roast. Soon the house filled with much better smells than it had before.

By the time her husband got home, she had showered, changed and donned her fanciest hostess apron.

“Wow!” he said as he passed her to go up and get ready. He got back just in time to set the table and light the candles.

When the doorbell rang, Eve ran to answer the door. As for the dessert, everybody raved, some even had seconds!
