Jenkins finds some real Easter magic. 300 words |
Apres Easter Dinner Jenkins threw open the ornate double doors of the dining room and stood surveying the destruction. He muttered some words the Mistress would not have approved of and walked in with a large garbage bag. “Who spilled what looks like a full glass of red wine on the damask tablecloth?” he asked himself. Grabbing a shaker, he dumped salt on the still damp stain. “That may help, it’s all I can do right now, since there’s no white wine left to treat it with, “he said sourly. As he was cleaning detritus from the long table, he spotted an ornate pin. He picked it up and turned it in his hand just to watch the light bounce off the gems on it. “This is probably worth a buck or two,” he thought and pocketed it. As he went about his work, the pocket that held the pin grew heavier and heavier. Finally, Jenkins stopped for breath, and the pocket ripped wide and out bounced a white rabbit in a bejeweled top hat and neck bow. “What ho, human! I grant you four wishes in sixty seconds,” the bunny said pulling out a huge pocket watch. Jenkins’ mind went blank. “Hurry on man, I must get back to my factory.” “Clean this place up as it was before the dinner.” “Done and done.” “Give me enough money to retire on,” was his next wish. “Ask and you shall receive,” was the reply. “I need an Easter bonnet for...” “Done, although it would probably suit a woman better.” With a click of his giant heels, the bunny was gone. When Jenkins checked his pocket, so was the jeweled pin. Removing the flowered hat, the butler wrote his resignation on the tablecloth and left through a side door for home. |
