The Accidental Gardener Looking out the window, planning my day, which did not include anything out the window… I’m not a gardener. My husband has a vegetable garden, and we do have some perennials nearer the house. I don’t mind weeding, which John does not like. But, I’m not one to run to the store as soon as spring arrives to buy plants… As I stood there, I saw something bright yellow in the yard. Thinking it must be a dandelion, I decided to go dig it up. I know, real gardeners don’t like dandelions much, but I’m not a real gardener, and I love their bright yellow color. Is there any such thing as a dandelion garden? As I got out there with a big spoon to dig it up, it started sprinkling. I hadn’t looked at the weather this morning, not intending to actually go anywhere, and like I said, not a gardener… I’m sure John knew it was going to rain and was delighted he didn’t need to water his vegetables. Then I got out there and saw another a ways away, but still in the grass. Wow! Just like a real garden! I dug them both up and filled in the holes. Walking to a little spot where there weren’t any flowers, I caught site of a third! Stopped for that one too! Just then, sprinkles turned to rain! I dug the dirt a bit and plopped the three dandelions in. Probably not the best job, but apparently the dandelions didn’t mind. I had to run back to the house, and still got pretty wet. So, frankly I forgot all about them, with the drying off and getting back to the day. Years later, I still get compliments about my dandelion garden! (It irks John to pieces!) |
