Flash Fiction

Fate

“Here we go again, I hear the trumpets blow again, blah, blah, blo again, taking a chance on love!” sang Nancy.
Jane started laughing.

“I can’t remember all the words, just the tune and what it was about.”

“Look it up?”

“It’s old, my grandparents sing it when they’re working sometimes. I wouldn’t know where to look it up…”

“Have you heard of this new invention… computer?” Jane said laughing again.

“Funny… but I don’t think I know how to look up something from long ago.”

“I think if you put in those first lines the rest will pop up.”

Let’s try it.

“1957!!! Woo woo! I don’t think my grandmother had even been born yet! How did you know that song.”

“My grandmother walks around singing old songs all the time. Doesn’t yours?”

“Ah, no. And I’ve heard her sing, she’s terrible at it. How about you?”

“So far, beyond what we are required to sing in school, Happy Birthday?”

Nancy laughed. “Ok sing Happy Birthday, I want to see how you do.”

“You’re crazy! But, here goes…” Jane sang Happy Birthday.”

“Hey!” Nancy said, “You sing pretty well!”

“You’re kidding…”

“No, you sounded nice, way better than me! You should sing on purpose!”

“Are you serious?”

“Ask other people, you have a really nice voice! I sing just for fun. You sound real, like a real singer, even just with Happy Birthday. You should sing more!”

Nancy and Jane were sitting on the grass, at recess at their school. They were in fifth grade. When she got home that day, Jane decided to try some more singing since Nancy liked it so much.

Today, Jane, and her husband, bought an island at the ripe old age of twenty-seven, with her last album’s
profits. Now that’s fate!
