Walking along the beach Kate and Jeff were holding hands. Their romance had only been going on a while, both were excited, and nervous.

Kate had had a small, but secret, crush on Jeff since second grade, when his family moved into town. Now that they were in ninth grade, he’d finally noticed her, and then their families’ rented vacations at the same beach, Kismet!

As they walked, they chatted about possibly finding some jewels, or maybe a secret love letter in a corked bottle, that came over from the other side of the ocean.

“Or a parrot!” Jeff said suddenly.

“A parrot?”

“Yeah! Wouldn’t that be cool! If it flew across the ocean!”

“I think that’s kind of far for a parrot…” Kate said.

“How far is it? I think a parrot could fly pretty far…”

“It would be miles and miles…”

“Oh… I’ve never been to the ocean before. I thought it was like a bigger lake.

“But they teach us all about it in geography class…”

“Yeah, I’m not really interested in geography.”

“How do you pass the tests?”

“Billy Wilder. He lets me cheat off his tests. I always make sure I’m sitting next to him.”

“You do this all the time?”

“Well, only since third grade when the tests got harder.”

“Why don’t you just study and learn it yourself?”

“I’m going to be a football star! I don’t need geography?!”

Suddenly Kate saw Jeff completely differently. Suddenly she realized she had imagined him the way she wanted him to be, and not who he actually was. Suddenly she lost her eight years of crush on Jeff…

But hey, he was here. Still holding Jeff’s hand, Kate started making plans that included Billy Wilder back home in Franklin… But right now, Jeff was kinda cute...
