free verse poem about an awakening to self climbing out of darkness |
"Like A Moth To A Flame" A dark corner stands alone I stand alone in that corner There's a hole No one knows how deep Because the hole is in the dark corner I can't hear anything No one can hear me Noise fell in and disappeared into the abyss In the dark corner of my existence It was me Who wanted to be Only me Drawn to the light Even if only to stars and fireflies in the night I seldom remember falling The depths seem to never end Darkness is thick Coldness binds my feet I'm drowning on black ice Like a moth searching for the flame I reach upwards Please find me Know me Pull me out of this darkness Out of this forsaken night A crack below on the stone wall Became hope The crevice imagined gave me a foothold Hope for survival But only brief expectations for rescue Darkness deceives Truth is hidden in the bottomless pit The hole is in the dark corner of my mind Lights out, no stars, no fireflies Sometimes in a stupor Like a dense fog in my mind's eye I vaguely recall traveling up and out No steps, no pulley, no helping hands Just reappearing on the surface Standing on solid ground Grounding steadies me An awakening reveals truth My mind, body, and spirit woke with lightning speed Nightmares walk, lurk, stalk among us Until the morning light dispels the fright It was me Always me Who wanted to be Only me Just me Forever who I am I am Revealed in the light of truth and value Don't you see See me in the light See the light in me See me 58 line count |
