The Phone Call Ring, ring… Sandy’s phone. It was Ted. Sandy was used to crushes. She got a lot of attention she didn’t want. When younger “ooo’s” and “ahs” from grown-ups. So embarrassing. Then when older, different attentions, boys who suddenly noticed girls, and girls who realized Sandy was getting more attention than they were. Even her best friend Ted from next door had started being different lately. Sandy assumed from experience that it was going to lead up to an actual date. It made her sad. She picked up the phone. “Hey! My family is going to the beach. I thought I’d see if you want to go with? We’re leaving soon and staying till five-ish. What do ya think?” “Ah…” she said… “My Dad’s renting a boat! Come on, the sun is out, it’s warm and lovely, come with us! You and I haven’t had time for fun in eons!” So, she went, after all it was Ted. As they sat in the back seat, Ted suddenly said, “Can I ask you a question?” ‘Here it comes…’ thought Sandy, but still, she said “Sure.” After all, she and Ted had been real friends for years. Quietly, almost whispering, he said, “Do you know Kathy Wells?” That took Sandy by surprise! “Why?” she asked. “I really want to ask her out, but I’m afraid she’ll say no. I’ve actually had a crush on her for years!” Ted said, turning a bit red. Suddenly Sandy was so happy! Suddenly she realized that Ted really was still her friend! She laughed, and gave him a big hug! “Ask her! She’ll probably love it! You’re a good catch!!” Ted burst out laughing! Sandy and Ted stayed best friends for years, and then in their middle twenties, the best friends took another route, they got married. |
